project No. 2
Installing
a slate path
When You have no Concrete Pad
-
Dig out about
3 to 4 inches (75-100mm) of ground over the length and width of
the proposed walkway or path. Install bender board along each side
to define the walkway of about 28 inches (say 700 mm) wide.
-
Spread fine
crushed granite (fines) to about one-inch (25mm) from the top. Rake
smooth, then water down with a garden spray.
-
Lay 24x24 inch
(600x600mm) slate or quartzite tiles of about ½" (12mm) thick from
American Slate (or SWL) in your favorite colors. Lay them in the center of
the walkway and about 4 inches (100mm) apart.
-
Spread more
fines to bring the fines to the same level as the slates. Wash in
with a garden spray. The walkway is ready to use and will become
firm and very durable.
The slates will
stand all but the most severe usage, and any slate can be easily replaced
in minutes.
Have fun, enjoy
your home, and tell me
about your project.
Best wishes,
John Place
