Fun project No.3

A garden walkway using Irregular Paving

  1. Dig out about 3 to 4 inches (75-100mm) of ground over the length and width of the proposed walkway or path. Install bender board along each side to define the walkway of about 28 inches (say 700 mm) wide.

  2. Spread fine crushed granite (fines) to about one-inch (25mm) from the top. Rake smooth, then water down with a garden spray.

  3. Lay some pieces of irregular shaped slates randomly along the walkway. Fit the sides together as best you can by sorting the material for matching edges.

  4. Spread more fines to bring the fines to the same level as the slates. Wash in with a garden spray. The walkway is ready to use and will become firm and very durable.

You will have an attractive and durable walkway, at minimum effort and expense. Try using, say, China Multicolor slate pieces with an occasional piece of Sea Green interspersed for a natural and dramatic effect.

Have fun, enjoy your home, and tell me about your project.

Best wishes,

John Place
